Pastor, Stan Peerless of Parkview Christian Church (located in Chesapeake) reports that there was no substantial or significant damage near the church in the wake of the tornado that hit Suffolk yesterday, Apr 28th, 2008.  Of the 3 twisters occuring in Virginia, (Colonial Heights, Brunswick Co. and Suffolk) the Suffolk storm was the most damaging.  The Parkview Christian Church family reports that to their knowledge no Disciple members were directly impacted by the destruction.  However, Stan did report that one member from Parkview did experience the storm firsthand as while at work the storm hit, ripping the roof off the individual's place of employment while they huddled for safety in a bathroom with co-workers.  That building is reportedly the one shown many times in the national news coverage showing a car that was thrown through the air into the side of a brick structure.  There are downed trees in the area where Stan resides and there were some power outages as was to be expected.  The Parkview and West Side Christian Churches are the closest Disciples congregations to the major damage area, Parkview about 5 miles from the area.  Both congregations decided there was no need to have either of the churches act as shelters as other more spacious and closer located buildings have been made available.  The word has gone out to the other District 8 churches of the Tidewater area for all the D8 churches to be aware of any Disciples that may have been adversely effected.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who may have suffered injury or property damage due to the tornadoes yesterday.  Disciples Men of Virginia is here ready and willing to assist with any way that might be needed.  For those men who attended the retreat...how important the the words of our guest, Carl Zerweck, Director of the Office of Disciples Volunteering now are to us right here in our backyard.

Greetings Men!
I want to personally thank each of you for participating in this past weekends Disciples Men regional retreat in Wakefield.
What a great time we all had!  We learned a lot and experienced a lot too!  A great time for fellowship, fun and spiritual renewal.
We will again see Carl Zerweck at the Disciples Men BBQ Luncheon on June 7th at Regional Assembly at Lynchburg College.  Please make sure to register for this event!  I look forward to seeing you there.
Let me know your thoughts on the retreat!
Remember next years retreat will April 24-26, 2009.
Stay in touch concerning your mens activities and contact me with that info so we can tell others what your group is doing.  Also I want to come and visit you in your district and I talked with several of you concerning my idea of having mens rallies to hopefully generate interest in mens ministry from churches and districts not participating.  Talk with the Disciples Men/CMF leaders in your area about this idea and get in touch in order for us to make plans for these gatherings over the next year.

Peace be with you all!
Stay in touch!

Thanks,
Ray Gryder, II
Interim Director
